Estate Little Princess: A 24-acre plantation belonging to The Nature Conservancy that overlooks Christiansted harbor. It contains 18th and 19th century great houses, water well towers, sugar mills and walking trails through native plants. Call 340-773-5575 or 774-7633 for opening times.

Estate Mount Washington : Cruise ship passengers use the dirt road leading to the great house for a nature walk. Located near Frederiksted, the estate was only rediscovered in 1984.

Ruins of the old stone buildings are open to the public but the great house is not. Visitors are invited to drive here as well as walk. The great house at neighboring Estate Butler Bay is privately owned and being remodeled; it is not open to the public.

Spratt Hall: This country estate near Frederiksted dates from 1650. St. Croix 's oldest great house, it is open only as an inn or as a dinner restaurant. It is not open for tours. The huge bedrooms on the second floor of the great house contain wonderful old mahogany furnishings. The inn offers a total of 12 rooms, some in adjacent efficiencies and one and two-bedroom cottages.

Rates from $100 for a single room to $350 for a two-bedroom cottage. Horseback riding, beach club available. For information, call 800-843-584.

Little LaGrange: Also located near Frederiksted and just off Mahogany Road, the 18th century Carl & Marie Lawaetz Family Museum dwelling and gardens show what life was like in the early 20th century. Guided tours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Call 340-772-1539.
