St. John Annaberg Sugar Mill copyright M. Timothy O'Keefe - www.GuideToCaribbeanVacations.com

These are the finest sugar plantation ruins on St. John and should not be missed. During the tour of the old plantation, you'll also enjoy a terrific view of Tortola and Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands.

The 18th-century Annaberg estate exhibits its windmill tower and slave quarters made of stone, ballast brick and coral, although nothing is fully restored or in working order.

Great vats once used to turn the sugar cane into molasses are still present.

Established in 1718, the plantation was named Anna for the daughter of absentee owner. Annaberg mean's Anna's Hill.

The park service provides an excellent brochure describing the ruins in detail.

It's worth the price of admission.
