St. Lucia - Where to Stay

Location! Location! Location! It's so important on St. Lucia because of the way things are so spread out. And travel on the mountain roads is often slower than you expect.

What do you intend to do on vacation? Spend most of your time roaming the island and sightseeing? Many of the best attractions are in the central and southern sections. That's a drive of an hour or two from Castries and not an ideal commute to make day after day.

You are probably better off staying at a property closer to your interests, away from Castries.

On the other hand, if you intend to concentrate on hotel-related activities like golf, tennis, and a good beach, you'll probably prefer St. Lucia's northern end, where most hotels are located.

Many hotels are a hundred rooms or less. Privately owned properties tend to be even smaller. For instance, the internationally known Anse Chastanet near Soufriere has had only 48 rooms for years.

St. Lucia's largest hotels are the all-inclusives. Perhaps it's a reflection of the other resorts, but St. Lucia's all-inclusive resorts tend to be more upscale than on other islands. They attract not only honeymooners but also families with children and wealthy, sophisticated older travelers. The wine lists at some of the all-inclusives rivals that of the best restaurants.

Villas offer an attractive option to large families or couples seeking more privacy. A large villa may sleep from 6 to 10 people, have its own swimming pool and include a maid/cook. They also come scaled down to studio-size with a kitchenette or as single bedroom apartment. The variations are endless.

Small hotels, inns and guesthouses provide a more local experience and personalized service at reasonable prices.
