Length: 3.5 miles. Time: 2 hours one-way. Difficulty: 2.

Trailhead: On the East Coast at Maudele. A National Trust guide must be arranged. The fee is EC$10 per person plus the guide fee of EC$60. Call 758/455-3099 or 758/453-1495.

The Eastern Nature Trail, developed by the National Trust, is within the proposed Praslin Protected Landscape, 871 hectares between Dennery village to the north and the Praslin community to the south. This 3.5-mile trail is an addition to the Fregate Islands Nature Reserve (the following hike).

The winding trail runs parallel to the Atlantic through sparse vegetation and long grass which evolves to dense cactus and forest with shade. The first mile ends at Anse Galet.

Next, the trail dips to a stony beach and then back up a cliff to Trou Zombie, a place the Amerindians reportedly believed was inhabited by evil spirits. From this point only a mile remains.

This is the most dramatic section, with caves and arches cut out by waves. The trail ends at the Fregate Islands Nature Reserve.
