Flamenco Beach is rated one of America's best

Culebra Island

This offshore island is home to famous Flamenco Beach, rated one of America's most beautiful beaches by the Travel Channel.

Almost a mile in length, Flamenco's white sands lack the motorized water sports so common on mainland Puerto Rico beaches. However, you can camp here. Small kiosks offer rental camping gear and also sell drinks and food.

Culebra was once used for military exercises by the United States. You'll see the rusting hulks of some of the training equipment west of Flamenco Beach.

Culebra also has other beautiful beaches. These include:

Malena, quiet beach that's part of the Nature Reserve, easy to reach from to road to Punta Soldado.

Mosquito, another quiet beach with some shade. Has a good snorkeling reef at both ends.

Sardinas, close to town with calm water and snorkeling.

Punta Soldado, a quiet beach composed of small pebbles instead of sand. However, swimming and snorkeling are both quite good. This is a scenic beach with a good view of Vieques and the Puerto Rico mainland.

Zoni, also a quiet beach that faces Northeast, with a great view of Culebrita, Cayo Norte and St. Thomas.

Directions: There are several ways to reach Culebra. By ferry: From the international airport, take Road 26 and exit on Road 3 to Fajardo. Turn left onto Road 194 and go southeast for 2.1 miles. Turn left on Road 195, then bear left at Fajardo Dock, where you board the ferry to Culebra.

Or you can fly over from San Juan or Fajardo. To get to Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport (Isla Grande) from Old San Juan take Road 26 towards Carolina and take exit to Road 1. Right after the Marina (Club Nautico de San Juan) make a right at Lindbergh St.

To reach Fajardo's Diego Jimenez Torres Airport, from San Juan take Road 26 and exit on Road 3 to Fajardo. Once in Fajardo, take exit Road 976 and follow the signs.
