Mt.
Liamuiga soon comes into
view on the left and stays with you for the rest of the journey.
This dormant 3,792-foot high volcano was called "Mt.
Misery" by the Amerindians and first European settlers,
though it's not likely there was anyone around the last time Mt. Liamuiga
erupted. Scientists say that was around 6,000 years ago.
When
St. Kitts gained independence from Britain in 1983, the new island government
changed the name from Mt. Misery to the more poetic but unpronounceable
Mt. Liamuiga (lee-A-mwee-ga). Liamuiga is the Carib word for "fertile
isle," a more apt description on all counts.
