Where to Stay: Nevis has many good hotels, some quite expensive. In the moderate price range is Hurricane Cove Bungalows situated on a hillside. They contain complete kitchens; 869/469-9462 or http://www.nevis1.com/hurricane_cove_bungalows.html. Also consider the 34-unit Oualie Beach Hotel located on Oualie Beach; Web site: www.oualiebeach.com. The unpretentious restaurant serves excellent local seafood dishes.

In contrast to the luxurious Four Seasons (the bathrooms alone are the size of a studio apartment) on Pinney's Beach is the island's best. With its own 18-hole golf course, rooms are over US$600 per day in winter; 800/332-3442; www.fourseasons.com. The Mount Nevis Hotel, which has a wonderful view of St. Kitts across the channel, is located near the airport. Its restaurant is renowned. Web site: www.mountnevishotel.com.

Keep in mind that it's warmer and more humid at the beach hotels. The mountain retreats, though cooler, tend to get more rain.

Check Nevis hotel availability and rates from Hotels.com, although this list and descriptions also includes some St. Kitts resorts.

Camping: In keeping with the upscale tone of the island, you won't find any designated camping facilities, although there is a field near the base of Mount Nevis where climbers can overnight when accompanied by a local guide.

Hiking Guides: Eco-Tours Nevis with David Rollinson; call 869/469-2091 or email droll@caribsurf.com . Top to Bottom with Jim Johnson (869/469-2501) specializes in the island's birds and plants. Michael Herbert (869/469-2501) has a special 30-minute hike with many of the same views as Nevis Peak but without all the effort. Also check out Sunrise Tours; 869/469-2758. Check with the Nevis tourist board in Charlestown for other possible guides; 869/469-1042.
