Cancun offers every conceivable water sport, from parasailing to jet skis, from sailboarding to scuba diving. Most hotels operate their own water sports concessions, or you can join one of the independent operators.

Visitors, however, don’t spend all their time on the beach.

Popular daytrips
include:

Taking a ferry to nearby Isla Mujeres and its Garrafon Beach for a lunch and reef snorkel.

Visiting the bird sanctuary at Isla Contoy.

Watching the Maya dancers perform at Xcaret, a nature park with lots of activities.

Swimming at Xel-Ha Lagoon, an incredibly popular water park.

Walking among the ruins at Tulum, the only walled city the Maya ever built.

Pyramid climbing at Coba, a huge Maya city still being excavated.

Farther inland are the elaborate ruins of Chichen Itza.

It takes an overnight trip to thoroughly explore Uxmal, near the old city of Merida.

If you’re truly interested in exploring the Maya ruins at leisure, you might want to consider staying at one of the Villas Archaeologicas.

Playa del Carmen, an hour’s drive south of Cancun, is turning into its own resort mecca. Many of the new all-inclusives (Iberostar, Riu) are located along Playa del Carmen. The beach equals Cancun’s.
