In Grenada, you have the services of two of the Caribbean 's best, Denis Henry of Henry's Tours (473/444-5313) and Telfor Bedeau (473/442-6200. I highly recommend either one.

Telfor Bedeau is based at his home in Soubise, about a mile south of Grenville, and at present all his organized hikes begin and return from his home base. The reason: Telfor doesn't have a car yet to transport people to other parts of the island. Should you have a car and engage Telfor for a day, the entire island is at your disposal. He will arrange a rendezvous point or come to meet you. Denis Henry, who has a small fleet of air-conditioned vans, makes many of the same hikes.

Telfor is one of the Caribbean 's original hiking guides, in business since 1962. He explains his background and philosophy:

"I started with some youngsters--but we were all young at the time--not even thinking I would be hiking 30 years later. So far I have covered over 350 hikes and walked a total distance of over 6,000 miles. So these legs of mine have done a wonderful job and I don't know how long they will continue, but I plan to keep hiking as long as I am fit. I have hopes of getting younger folks (Grenadians) interested, so that instead of doing all sorts of nonsense and mischief, they will go hiking, learn about their country and make themselves better citizens."

Telfor is know for his “marathon hikes” that might climb five or six mountains peaks and cover as much as 30 miles. However, he won't take anyone on such a hike until he has “broken them in” on what he calls a “medium hike.”

He explains, "Sometimes a visitor will come saying, 'I am fit!' and 'I do this exercise and that exercise.' But the hiking terrain in Grenada is a totally different thing, and when you think you are fit, you have not begun to be fit."
