Except for Santo Domingo, all-inclusive hotels are the most popular throughout the Dominican Republic.

These became popular since most guests are from Canada and Europe and do not speak Spanish.

However, it is considerably less expensive--perhaps a third of the price or less--to stay in a smaller hotel without all the activities and the huge buffet meals.

Restaurants are inexpensive compared to U.S. and European norms.

This map of the Dominican Republic should help pinpoint the general resort locations.

North Coast

Puerto Plata:
Where DR tourism first began. This is the most famous city on the North Coast but it doesn't have many major hotels in the city proper. Almost all are well away from Puerto Plata.

Playa Dorada: This complex of hotels is located between Puerto Plata and Cabarete. It's a haven of big hotels, a short ride from the international airport.

Cabarete Hotels: One of the Caribbean's best windsurfing spots that attracts people from all over the world.

Rio San Juan/Playa Grande: A relatively remote and undeveloped area 70 kms. away from Puerto Plata airport, 55 kms. from Sosua and 45 kms. from Cabarete.
