This is Dominica's newest national park. The land is so rugged that it was favored by runaways slaves called Maroons.

Six Maroon camps—Pharcel, Clemence, Cicero , Quashie, Juba and Robin, all named after their leaders—were located within the park.

However, the exact locations of the camps still are unknown.

The first recorded ascent of 4,747-foot Morne Diablotin was made by Scots physician Dr. John Imray in 1867. There is a section of the mountain known today as Imray's view. Two Princes, George Albert and George, climbed the peak in 1880.
