Look midweek--and stay up late

It's not a trade secret when airlines post their lowest airfares of the week. Yet most people still don't know when they should look.

Wednesday is the best day of the week to buy cheap tickets.

Here's how the system works:

Airline price wars often start on Tuesdays and prices sometimes go lower on Wednesdays.

Best time to find a low cost fare is after midnight on Tuesday, or 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, to allow time for the computer changeover.

It's not that the lowest fares are posted then but remember that airlines also typically reload their computers then with the cheap airfares announced the day before that weren't purchased within 24 hours.

Those cancellations are yours to take advantage of.

The Tuesday midnight fare change is based on Eastern Standard Time. Those living in other time zones can start looking two or three hours earlier.
