Location: Almost in the center of Aruba, and can be seen from virtually anywhere on the island. This 541-foot high volcanic formation is usually called The Haystack, though its official name is the Hooiberg. Its vegetation is mostly yellow poui and the typical cacti found everywhere. You may even see the real divi-divi tree or Watapana (Caesalpina coriara), as opposed to some other plants often mistaken for it. The true divi-divi has inconspicuous but fragrant blossoms and thick curled pods rich in tannin. At one time the pods were exported to Germany for use in the leather industry. You can still use them for shining the dust off your shoes. But wait until after you've climbed the several hundred steps that lead to the top of the Haystack. On a clear day, you can see Venezuela, and view yellow orioles and several species of doves.
